While camping this past weekend in the Catskills of New York, we were reminded of the power of a simple and supportive skincare routine. Camping, as enchanting as it can be, isn't always butterflies and rainbows. It can be a rugged adventure that challenges our spirits and skin. But amidst the wilderness, we discovered that a few mindful skincare rituals can keep us grounded and refreshed, even when Mother Nature tests our resilience.
Here is a list to consider when planning for an extended time in the outdoors:
1. Sun Protection is Non-Negotiable:
We here at SallyeAnder love a good hat and sunglasses! Wide-brimmed hats and shades are a great addition to shield your face and eyes from direct sunlight. The sun's rays can be harsh, especially when you spend long hours outdoors. Always pack and apply sunscreen with a high SPF to protect your skin from harmful UV rays. Remember to reapply every two hours after swimming or sweating. (Apply our No-Bite-Me Bug Repellent on top of your sunscreen!)
2. Hydration is Key:
Camping often involves physical activities (from setting up camp to hiking) and exposure to warm weather, which can lead to dehydration. Dehydrated skin can become dry, itchy, and irritated. Drink plenty of water throughout the day to keep yourself and your skin hydrated from within.
3. Biodegradable Cleansing with SallyeAnder Soaps:
Camping doesn't mean sacrificing cleanliness. Our biodegradable soaps are gentle on your skin and the environment, making them the perfect choice for responsible campers. Embrace nature while respecting it, knowing our soaps leave no harmful traces behind. Cleanse your skin gently to remove dirt, sweat, and pollutants that can clog pores and cause breakouts.
4. Clean Nails and Happy Feet
Our Handled Nail Brush provides a convenient way to keep our finger and toe nails clean and dirt-free after our outdoor adventures and to make sure we can do it all again the next day, our Heavy Duty Foot Therapy Cream, enriched with nourishing botanicals, including White Willow, helps relax, rejuvenate and moisturize.
5. First Aid
A first aid kit is crucial when camping! Being more physical around natural elements will surely drum up some bumps and bruises. We recommend adding our Rescue Me Balm to your kit for minor burns from the campfire, scrapes, and more.
6. Gentle Exfoliation:
Exfoliation can be beneficial, removing dead skin cells. However, be cautious while camping, as the wilderness exposes your skin to various elements. Avoid harsh exfoliants that could cause micro-tears in the skin, and instead, opt for gentle, natural exfoliants like our Ayate Pouch or Washcloth or a scrubby soap like our Oatmeal Essential Soap!
7. Bug Off:
Insects are an inevitable part of camping, and bug bites can leave your skin feeling itchy and irritated. Prevent bug bites by using our No-Bite-Me Bug Repellent. Also, consider wearing long sleeves and pants when bugs are more active in the evening. Pants tucked into socks are a great way to avoid ticks and bites, too!
9. Keep Gear Clean with SallyeAnder's Hogwash!:
Maintaining cleanliness is essential, not just for ourselves but also for our camping gear. Our Hogwash! Stain Removing Soap keeps towels, clothes, and equipment fresh and free from dirt and bacteria.
9. Nighttime Skincare Routine:
Even though camping can be physically exhausting, don't skip a nighttime skincare routine. Clean your face before bed to remove sweat, dirt, and sunscreen residue. Apply our face mask around the campfire and a hydrating and reparative nighttime moisturizer before bed, like Nourish Face Balm, to help your skin recover while you sleep.
